What a turnaround for the books this is. Nintendo, possibly the world’s most reserved video game company are giving in to popular demand and are trialling demos for WiiWare. Whilst Nintendo have offered select Nintendo DS demos via the Nintendo Channel for a long time now, Wii owners have never had the opportunity to trial Wii software.

Currently only three games are available to demo on your Wii; these are NyxQuest, Brit Trip Beat and Final Fantasy My Life as a DarkLord. All three of these can be downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel directly to your Wii or SD card and are ready to play right away, don’t forget that you if you do decide to purchase the full game on WiiWare then you’ll need to purchase some Wii Points or Nintendo Points in advance.

Although you can purchase these directly on the Wii, Amazon.com quite often discount Wii Points (see how to buy WiiWare games on Amazon) and their free delivery service means you can save money on your gaming very easily. Hopefully more WiiWare Demo’s will hit the Wii Shop Channel in the coming months.

Every year between July and October we see the summer drought of hit titles on pretty much every platform. Developers and Publishers are saving their key brands for the Christmas Holiday schedule and tend to release second and even third rate games to fill the void. One upside to this time of year is that you can catch up with great titles you may have missed and buy them at a bargain price. We’ve had a thorough search through Amazon’s database and here for you are our top five recommended cheap Wii games from Amazon.

Alien Syndrome. This little known over the top shooter comes from Sega and packs in tons of action, over 100 enemies, 8 weapons and huge bosses. What is there not to like? Grab Alien Syndrome on Amazon for less than $20.

Manhunt 2. After all the controversy of Manhunt coming to Wii many people actually failed to buy the game as it slipped under the radar. Whilst it looks and plays like a PlayStation 2 game, Manhunt 2 is still probably the Wii’s goriest and most sadistic game and it’s worth a look just for that reason alone. Buy Manhunt 2 on Amazon for under $25.

Elebits. This unusual Konami title uses a first person shooter style engine to bring cute kids story to life. You basically walk around your house sucking little electrical creatures up into your vacuum cleaner. A great physics showcase on Wii and nicely detailed to boot, buy Elebits on Amazon for under $17.

Samba De Amigo is a fun rhythm based music game where you shake your Wii Remote like a maraca. Yes it’s a remake of a Dreamcast game but Music and Monkey’s make Samba De Amigo on Amazon a beautiful and cheap partnership for under $15.

De Blob is a colourful open world style platformer with great music and graphics. You control a blob of paint and your job is to bounce around a huge city painting buildings. You can snap up DeBlob on Amazon for under $20 at Amazon. Offers: Use our Godaddy coupon codes for August 2009 to save money on hosting and web domains, using the August 2009 Squarespace discount code ‘WEASEL’ at checkout will get you 12% off the lifetime of your account.

This week we have another interesting selection of games to download on your Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DSi. Digital Downloading small and affordable titles is becoming very popular and is a great way to get new games for your favourite system in this touch economic climate.

On WiiWare this week we have three titles:

Water Warfare from Hudson Software. If you’ve ever been worried about the gore and over the top violence in the modern first person shooter and its possible affect on your children then Water Warfare could be the answer. Unlike any other FPS I’ve seen, Water Warfare has been designed for kids and features Water Pistols instead of guns and Wet Clothes instead of blood. Featuring up to 8 player online play this could be a perfect online title for younger Wii gamers and costs 800 points. Check back for our review of Water Warfare very soon.

Reel Fishing from Natsume. Whilst not being a big fan of pulling an innocent fish from the water I can’t see too much harm in doing it virtually on your Wii. For just 500 points you can use the motion sensing Wii Remote for that real life fishing feel in your home and best of all its cruelty free.

Silver Star Reversi from Agetec. Whilst not exciting; Reversi (or Othello as I know it) is one of those classic strategic board games like Chess and Checkers. This simple little 500 point title for up to two players might not be your first choice of game but is fun every now and then.

Retro fans have one title on the Virtual Console this week:

Fantasy Star Zone II from Sega. This Classic Sega Master System title from 1988 sees you battling against the Nenon once again in a bid to protect the Fantasy Zone. A colourful friendly side scrolling shooter which is more difficult than it looks and costs 500 Nintendo points.

Nintendo DSi owners have one title this week:

Sudoku Master from Hudson. Whilst the craze for Sudoku has calmed down over the past year you can’t deny its impact on the world. If you love the idea of some portable maths puzzle action then you can’t go wrong with this for 500 points.

Buy Nintendo points now
New: Buy Nintendo points from Amazon.com

Our favourite Japanese company are finally spending some of the cash they’ve been printing with the incredible sales of the Nintendo DS and Wii. After a successful advertising and sponsorship campaign on Channel 4 in the UK last year, Nintendo have decided to sponsor a new quiz show called Britain’s Best Brain for Channel 5. It appears the show’s format uses a similar set of skills to that of the successful Brain Age for DS and Big Brain Academy for Wii. Contestants on the show will need to be highly skilful with their memory, co-ordination, numeracy, recognition and risk taking.

If you’re (un)lucky enough to live in the UK there are seven open auditions across July and August in major shopping malls but those who don’t live close enough can email the production company for more information, we’ll let you know as soon as we hear if Nintendo announce anything similar for US audiences.

List of audition dates;

18th-19th July – Braehead Shopping Centre, Glasgow

25th-26th July – Arndale Centre, Manchester

1st-2nd August – Westfield’s Shopping Centre, London

8th-9th August – Queen Street, Cardiff

15th-16th August - The Bullring, Birmingham

After last year’s casual outing at E3 where hardcore fans were pushed aside to make room for Wii Fit moms, Nintendo had a lot of work to do to make things up to those who felt let down previously. As usual things had been very quiet right up until their conference so no one really knew for sure what was going to be shown and which audiences Nintendo were going to ponder to.

Thankfully right from the start Nintendo’s very own milf mistress Cammie Dunaway took to the stage and announced New Super Mario Bros., a spiritual sequel to the hit DS title. No one ever complains when Nintendo reveal a new 2D side scroller and this time up to four players can all play cooperatively at once on the same Wii (controlling Mario, Luigi and two toad brothers) with a zooming camera system which works in a similar manner to that seen in Super Smash Brothers Brawl, I can’t see this not being top selling hit later this year.

Cammie then went on to introduce us to Wii Fit Plus which is pretty much a standalone update disc which brings more activities and mini games along with more accurate weight monitoring statistics (such as calorie counting). Wii Fit plus arrives bundled with the Balance Board for new buyers but those who have already purchased the original Wii Fit will be able to purchase the disc on its own for a substantial saving (in money and white plastic). I’d be interested in playing some of the new games but I don’t think Wii Fit Plus is an essential purchase for me but I’m sure it will earn even more money for Nintendo.

Then it was Reggie’s turn to take the stage and he showed us more of the upcoming Wii Sports Resort and the new Wii Motion Plus accessory. Aside from revealing some of the new games and showing some live demo’s (which did look pretty good) we didn’t learn too much new but seeing as the Wii Sports Resort release date is July 26th we don’t have long to wait. Reggie then briefly mentioned other upcoming Wii Motion Plus games including; Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger Woods from EA, Virtua Tennis 2009 from Sega and Red Steel 2 from Ubisoft. A few more trailers were shown; Final Fantasy The Crystal Bearers an exclusive Wii title following in the footsteps of Crystal Chronicles on the GameCube. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days looked like a nice DS title for fans of the unusual RPG beat ‘em up starring Disney and Square Enix characters. Mario & Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story is another cute DS title which see’s our hero’s shrunk to a teensy size and then swallowed by King Bowser. Then another surprise announcement, classic RPG franchise Golden Sun is returning to DS very soon for a full 3D adventure.

Cammie returned to speak about DSi, she said something about it selling bucket loads and that every staff member at Nintendo has houses made of solid gold. No I jest really but to be honest we all know the DS and Wii are unstoppable sellers so we don’t need to be told how well they’re flying off the shelves. DS Trailers for COP (a GTA China Wars clone) and Women’s Murder Club (an interactive women’s novel) were then revealed along with Nintendo DSi Ware exclusive title Mario vs Donkey Kong 3 mini’s march again. Mario vs Donkey Kong 3 costs just 800 Nintendo points and is released next week, a top bargain for a first party title with custom level creation and online sharing. She then went onto explain basic details about DSi Facebook photo sharing, mentioned Zelda Spirit Tracks and all new Wario Ware DIY which features and extensive mini game building kit to design your own micro games to share with your friends.

Head of Nintendo Japan Satoru Iwata then arrived on stage to talk about the diversity of gamers, non gamers and those middling in between. Skipping past those details we then found out about the Wii Vitality Sensor; a glorified pulse rate detector. This idea isn’t that new to video games and I don’t really see a need for Nintendo to sell us another accessory which will hardly be supported or used in games aside from one original application. Luckily before the crowd turned into a baying mob Iwata presented Super Mario Galaxy 2, the first sequel to a 3D Mario Game ever, the video looked pretty good albeit quite similar looking to the original. Pleasant new surprises were rideable Yoshi’s, new abilities like a Drill Suit which let Mario burrow into the ground and most importantly; busier looking planets to explore.

Aside from some more trailers for upcoming games like Sega’s The Conduit the final big announcement was a brand new Metroid Game being made by Nintendo in conjunction with Team Ninja. Metroid Other M appears in an intriguing new semi 2D action game which looks to tell the story behind our beloved bounty hunter Samus Aran, it was difficult to gather much more about the game apart from it having stunning graphics and lots of action on screen at once – oh and Samus as a little girl, cute.

And that was it, an eye opening show from Nintendo with lots of key new titles. Sadly no mention of Pikmin or Zelda Wii until afterwards when Miyamoto said they were being worked on but not ready for us to see yet, we may have to wait until the next E3, Pax or GDC to find out more about those.

So far since the Wii’s launch it was only possible to purchase digital games for the system by using special points either in the form of the card or bought in advance on your credit card. Now in conjunction with Amazon.com publishers will now have the opportunity to list their WiiWare games for sale on Amazon’s WiiWare section as well as the Wii Shop Channel. Not only does this mean that users can avoid the hassle of buying points but also take advantage of any Amazon gift vouchers they may have unused and even look forward to special WiiWare discounts not available elsewhere. The first game available to purchase on WiiWare at Amazon is the terrific World of Goo which we recently awarded 5/5 and is probably the essential WiiWare game to own.

Sometimes I don’t want to surf the web sitting at my desk and that’s why the Wii’s Internet Channel powered by Opera suits me just fine. I can sit on my couch and just point my way around the internet with a bag of potato chips and a cat on my lap. You may also think that a games console wouldn’t be that suited to web surfing but Opera’s hard work have brought a fully functional web browser to the Wii which packs most features and the rendering ability of its desktop browser cousin.

The on screen keyboard for the Wii Internet Channel works quite well but typing long web addresses and using webmail can be a little slow compared to using a real keyboard. Well I no longer have to worry about that because Logitech have teamed up with Nintendo and released a fantastic small white Wireless Wii Styled keyboard. Unlike other wireless keyboards this one contains special shortcut buttons which correspond to the buttons on the Wii Remote. At $50 it’s a little expensive but the build quality is superb and no other Wii Keyboard has the official Nintendo seal of approval so if you want 100% compatibility the Logitech Cordless Keyboard for Wii is your best choice.

Last week Nintendo released Firmware version 4.0 for the Nintendo Wii which finally brought us the promised storage solution that we’ve all been waiting for. Firstly after updating to firmware 4.0 you’ll notice a new SD Card icon on your Wii Menu Screen, if you do not have a SD card inserted the icon will be grey but if you do it will be coloured blue. Clicking on this icon will bring up a new SD card menu displaying all Wii Channels and Games currently stored on the card. From here you can manually request the Wii to launch a game or channel which will copy the ROM to the Wii’s internal memory and then run as usual. It is recommend that from now on you keep around 400 blocks of Wii internal storage free to facilitate in the easy launching of SD based games, if you have less than required you will be asked to manually free up space or use the new automatic system which will copy games from the Wii over to the SD card for you. The Wii Shop has also been upgraded so that new purchases (as well as redownloads) can be sent directly to SD to avoid having to ‘clean the fridge’ before purchasing anymore. Other minor updates include:

SDHC support for Photo and Wii Speak Channels.

Improved SD read and write speed for better quality cards.

Fixes to attempt to block new installs of the Homebrew Channel and other security holes.

Europe can already look forward to the sequel of Pikmin being released on the New Play Control brand this year.

I have been skateboarding ever since I was young (12 years old that is). I love the feeling of a good landing after a hard trick; however, most shoes can’t handle the intensity I bring to the table. Throughout the years I’ve switched from various brands in search of a shoe that not only is stylish, but also durable as well. With this being said, I think it is necessary to talk a little bit about the Vans Half Cab skate shoe for men. The Vans Half Cab is a classic skate shoe created by professional skateboarder Steve Caballero, hence the name ‘half-cab’. He is an outstanding athlete and has been a role model in my life.

I came across this discount at Eastbay. It works great and helped me save big on a pair of Hal-Cabs. Thanks for the inspiration Steve and thanks for the comfort, Vans.

Yes I agree Let’s Tap sounds like another 60 minute time waster which fills the void whilst we wait for the next Super Mario game but I’ll give it a fair chance and play it when it hits the stores. Originally a PC game, this mech fighter is being redesigned with Wii Motion controls and now features stereoscopic visuals meaning if you wear those red and blue glasses it will look like one of those naff 1980’s 3D B-movies you may have seen once upon a time. The game features:

Single player and Multiplayer modes

Robot Customization

Compelling mechanics

Special Attacks

20 weapons and 10 arenas

Whilst the screenshots and trailer don’t look too hot (sparse locations and low quality textures), it could still be worth a play even if it is just for the 3D novelty factor. The Battle Rage Robot Wars release date is February 20th.

We try to stay on topic at Wii Game Review, but occasionally we get the urge to talk about personal stories. This one does involve the Wii so we deemed it more appropriate than the everyday rants and raves. A buddy James of ours posted his profile to eHarmony back in November. After a few dates with different women, he met Meg.

They had similar interests, as eHarmony matches you that way. What they didn’t know was that both were huge Wii Golf fans. This wasn’t unsurfaced until they were at a Christmas party. It’s funny how something as small as an interest in a video game can bring people closer together. It’s fun to go and visit James and see the two of them teeing off in the living room, through their window when you’re walking up his front steps.

So the moral of the story… Wii is a powerful thing and can be a sealer in a relationship (apparently). eHarmony is running a promo for one free month. What are you waiting for?

Are you getting the free Gamesweasel video show?

If like me you have downloaded games from the Wii Shop Channel then you may have noticed that the internal 512MB’s of flash storage inside the Wii doesn’t take that long to fill up. When you fill up your Wii System with too many games you’ll have to free up space before you can spend any more Wii Points. At this point you only have two options; delete some games or copy them to a SD Card. Now the Nintendo shop channel is intelligent and any games you delete from your system can be redownloaded anytime without having to pay for them again, however you’ll still run into a storage crisis and end up having to delete your newer games to redownload your older ones.

As your Nintendo Wii has an SD Memory Card slot your best bet is to purchase a 2GB SD Memory Card and move your game flies onto it to free up some space. We think using SD Cards to manage your Wii memory is the best solution because your files are kept locally and you can move them about whenever you want. What happens if the Wii Shop Channel is closed for maintenance? That’s right; you’ll not be able to access your games library until its open again. Don’t forget that redownloading uses up extra internet bandwidth and if you are on a capped package, saving every megabyte can be very helpful to avoid those over usage charges.

As you may have heard, the Wii securely encrypts digital Wii games and channels and this process adds extra time to the copy process, this makes for unusual results across SD Cards as they’re generally designed for digital photos, not encrypted and compressed games. We’ve tried many SD Memory Cards over the last few months but have found only one to be consistently fast when copying from the Wii and copying back to the Wii. The SanDisk Extreme III with its ESP technology has a minimum speed of 20MB’s a second and its 2GB Flash capacity is four times that of the Wii itself. You could easily fit hundreds of Virtual Console or WiiWare games onto this SD flash card as well as backups of your Wii game saves if you want to protect your game progress from accidental deletion or corruption. You may see cheaper SD Cards on the market but their poor quality flash memory means slow transfers and even the risk of data loss. We can’t recommend the SanDisk Extreme 3 SD Card for Wii highly enough.

Buy the SanDisk Extreme III now
New: Buy a SanDisk Extreme III from Amazon.com

Ok imagine you’re a big games studio wanting to dominate the world, you suddenly notice out of the corner of your eye that Nintendo are making millions of dollars by selling a fitness game and peripheral for the Wii. Which of the following would you do?

A) Encourage gamers to play Wii Fit to try and perhaps get themselves on track with their overall fitness.

B) Jump on the bandwagon by developing your own software and peripheral.

If you said A it suggests you are a kind hearted person who tries to do the right thing. If you said B it suggests you are a ruthless in whatever it takes to make money.

Enough of the cynicism, let’s look at EA’s new fitness software in a little more depth. Called EA Sports Active, the game is exclusive for the Wii and it has been developed with the help of fitness experts with women’s fitness in mind, though just like Wii Fit it can be used by the whole family. EA Sports Active for the Wii will use Nintendo’s Wii balance board for certain exercises but generally focuses more on cardiovascular exercise rather than the balancing elements from Wii Fit. The game also comes bundled with special leg straps that will hold the Wii Remote and Nunchuck for the rigorous exercises like Running or Jogging; whilst unessential it’s a nicer alternative to placing them in the pocket of your jogging pants as suggested by Nintendo. We’ll keep an eye on the progress of this up until the EA Sports Active release date of spring 2009 – meanwhile check out the EA Sports Active trailer.

If you can’t wait that long to exercise in front of your TV then you can buy Wii Fit from Amazon as they currently have the hot selling device in stock (still rare, even after a year). While you’re there don’t forget to pick up a spare Wii Fit rechargeable battery pack for your Balance Board to make sure you don’t run out of juice whilst getting fit.
