Electronic Arts have let us know of a surprise new party game for Wii coming out this year. Celebrity Sports Showdown is a sports minigame collection with a difference. Unlike Wii Sports where you use your Mii to play tennis, golf boxing and more - in Celebrity Sports Showdown you’ll be using one of ten (announced so far) celebrity caricatures to take part in twelve wacky outdoor sports.

The current list of confirmed celebrities to play as is:

• Fergie (Singer from the Black Eyed Peas)
• Avril Lavigne (Solo Singer)
• LeAnn Rimes (Solo Singer)
• Keith Urban (Singer Musician)
• Nelly Furtado (Singer Musician)
• Paul Pierce (Basketball Player)
• Mia Hamm (Soccer Player)
• Kristi Yamaguchi (Figure Skater)
• Reggie Bush (American Footballer)
• Sugar Ray Leonard (Boxer)

As you can see there is a nice even split between pop stars and professional sports stars. Confused? We are too, but if you’ve ever wanted to see Avril Lavigne and LeAnn Rimes settle their differences in a Dodgeball fight (and let’s face it who wouldn’t?) then this is the game for you.

The 12 sports to play are:

• Beach Volleyball
• Inner-Tubing
• Wild Water Canoeing
• Hurdle Derby
• Slalom Showdown
• Cliff Hangers
• Smash Badminton
• Rapid Fire Archery
• Joust Duel
• Curling
• Arena Dodgeball
• Air Racers

We sure weren’t expecting EA to announce Celebrity Sports Showdown but we’re really pleased that they’re keeping their promise to being new original games to Wii. The game is pencilled in for winter 2008; we’ll let you know when we get a more detailed Celebrity Sports Showdown release date.
